Ranthambore Fort lies within the Ranthambore National Park, near the city of Sawai Madhopur, the park being the former hunting grounds of the Maharajahs of Jaipur until the time of India’s Independence. It is a formidable fort having been a focal point of the historical developments of Rajasthan. The fort was held by the Chahamanas (Chauhans) until the 13th century, when the Delhi Sultanate captured it.
Ranthambore Fort reflects the entity of Chauhans in the history and is famed around the world for its National park and Tiger reserve, which alone is spread in an area of 400 sq Km. This national park was a hunting paradise for the Maharajas back then.
The fort is perched at the height of 400 meters and the inscriptions in the fort also reflect signature style of Nagil Jat clan, a small clan which existed during the Ashokan era. The Jogi Mahal in the fort is a guest house for eminent personalities.
